About the Belltown neighborhood, Seattle, WA
Belltown in downtown Seattle, Washington is a neighborhood on the waterfront just north of the famous Pike Place Market. It was named after William Nathaniel Bell, on whose land the neighborhood was built.
Previously a semi-industrial and low-rent district, Belltown has become a trendy neighborhood filled with popular nightspots and over one-hundred restaurants offering everything from street food carts to haute cuisine. Here you’ll also find charming boutiques and impressive art galleries, along with residence towers where one can imagine Frasier Crane looking out at the Space Needle.
On Western Ave at Vine Street is Cottage Park. Here are the last remaining wood frame residences in downtown Seattle built in 1916, marking the 1850s shoreline. Here, too is the Belltown P-Patch, one of seventy-six community gardens managed by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods P-Patch Community Gardening Program.
Also notable in Belltown is the 8.5 acre Olympic Sculpture Park, which opened in 2007, containing contemporary pieces as well as plants indigenous to the Pacific Northwest and various ecosystems. It is open and free to the public.
No consideration of Belltown would be complete without mentioning the current cupcake craze. Seattleites are every bit as particular about cupcakes as they are about coffee. In a recent “cupcake-off” at the Belltown Bistro the hands down winner was the Orange Chocolate Solo cupcake from Yellow Leaf Cupcake Co. Nearby features include: Qwest Field, Safeco Field, Seattle Center, Seattle University, and University of Washington.
